Job Summary

Manage the day-to-day operations of the Transportation Department to ensure safe, on-time performance consistent with company rules, policies, labor agreements and governmental regulations. 


Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the daily planning of train and switch operations.
  • Manage crew starts, crew size and overtime in a cost-effective manner. 
  • Supervision of the Managers of Terminal Operations as well as train crew personnel, yardmasters, and dispatchers.
  • Lead employees with clear direction; provide training, coaching and mentoring to employees through monitoring of employee performance.
  • Ensure safe work practices by promoting safety awareness as well as enforcing safety policies and procedures.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents, determine root cause and resolve or escalate through company's disciplinary process.
  • Meet transportation goals by utilizing metrics, managing equipment and staff, reporting results and recommending improvements and solutions.
  • Coordinate Engineering department's weekly track outages.
  • Plan and coordinate mainline outages with our Class I partners to minimize train delays.
  • Respond to any emergency situations.



  • High School diploma or equivalent required, Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Five years of railroad transportation experience.
  • Working knowledge of collective bargaining agreements, company rules and governmental regulations.
  • Energetic, ability to work autonomously, adapt rapidly to changing circumstances and situations and manage stressful situations.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented, can motivate others to achieve set objectives and maintain positive interactions.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, as well as analytical skills for reviewing costs and preparing budget reports.
  • Time management, organizational and effective planning skills to achieve work deadlines.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in a fast paced 24/7 operational environment.
  • Computer Skills Microsoft Office, ability to learn company software.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
