Job Summary

This position is responsible for the servicing, basic field repairs, and assisting machinist with locomotive repairs.


Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Machinist Helpers may be required to sand, fuel, supply, and clean locomotives and other TRRA equipment in Madison Yard, but not at the exclusion of the TWUA.
  • Machinist Helpers will not be permitted, nor are they entitled to, locomotive duel duties outside of the fueling station in Madison Pit (they may fuel at future designated fueling stations, within Madison Yard, designated by the Carrier).
  • Machinist Helpers will be allowed to perform work as defined in the Machinist Helper scope rule and may be required to do basic field work without the assistance of a Machinist.
  • Major repairs to locomotives and equipment that are in the shop will be limited to qualified Machinist or Machinist Helpers working under direct control of such qualified Machinist.
  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake equipment, running gear or locomotive components
  • Perform periodic service on locomotives
  • Move locomotives
  • Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action.
  • Complete annual training, pass welding qualification, and safety rules examination.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma /GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Able to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Mechanical Experience
  • Welding Requirements


Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience as a machinist.


Basic Competencies

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications-both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and trouble shooting skills)
  • Mechanical aptitude


Physical Requirements

  • Heavy work, lifting up to 85 pounds
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection.
  • Stooping/bending/kneeling/crouch/balancing/climbing
  • Walking on uneven surfaces
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor


Environmental Conditions

Work outside in all weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, around loud noise and fumes, in confined spaces and on occasion at elevated heights.



Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work.


Pay Rate

Full Rate - $212.29

Machinist Helpers will start at 100% of the aforementioned daily rate of pay.



Company paid on the job training (which may require travel) provided. 


Probationary Period

 45 Days


Union Membership

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
