Job Summary

This position is responsible for the inspection, repair and maintenance of diesel locomotives.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot and repair malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake equipment, electrical components, running gear or locomotive components
  • Rivet, bolt, glue, braze or weld to fabricate, modify or design replacement parts for equipment
  • Fabricate, cut, shape, and perform finish operations using various types of materials
  • Perform periodic service on locomotives
  • Move locomotives
  • Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action.
  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examination.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma /GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Able to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Mechanical Experience
  • Blueprint Reading

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience as a machinist.
  • One or more years of PTC experience.

Basic Competencies

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications-both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and trouble shooting skills)
  • Composite Mechanical aptitude

Physical Requirements

  • Heavy work, lifting up to 85 pounds
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection.
  • Stooping/bending/kneeling/crouch/balancing/climbing
  • Walking on uneven surfaces
  • Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor

Environmental Conditions

Work outside in all weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, around loud noise and fumes, in confined spaces and on occasion at elevated heights.

Shifts/Hours

Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work.

Pay Rate

Entry Rate - $190.89- (If prior experience would qualify for Journeyman rate of 254.53)

Full Rate - $316.26 once composite qualified (Up to a Five-year Program)

Training

Company paid on the job training (which may require travel) provided. 

Probationary Period

45 Days

Union Membership

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
