Job Summary

This position is responsible for the installation, inspection, repair and maintenance of signals and switches.

Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Inspect and test signal circuitry and equipment, test signal equipment and inspect and test batteries using electrical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in signal equipment and systems.
  • Build, install and dismantle signal communication structures, locate existing utilities, dig, fill and tamp holes and trenches, set poles, climb poles and ladders to set equipment, unreel and install wires and cables.
  • Maintain and repair signal communication circuitry, systems and components.
  • Safely and effectively operate large non-power tools, high precision measuring tools, non-power handheld tools, power hand held tools and low precision measuring tools.
  • Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action.
  • Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examination.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma /GED
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Able to read, write and communicate in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electrical Experience/Certified
  • Journeyman's License
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Endorsement A or must be able to obtain a CDL Endorsement A permit within the first 60 days of employment.

Basic Competencies

  • Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications-both general and technical)
  • Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
  • Reasoning skills (problem solving and trouble shooting skills)
  • Mechanical aptitude

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Push/Pull 150lb. force
  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection; must not be color-blind
  • Stooping/bending/kneeling/crouch/balancing/climbing/holding/grasping/turning and pulling.
  • Walking long distances on uneven surfaces

Environmental Conditions

Work outside in all weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, in confined spaces, around loud noise and fumes and at elevated heights and around high voltage equipment.


Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work.

Pay Rate

Probationary Rate - $240.46 per day

Entry Rate - $242.42 per day

Full Rate - $297.94 per day


Company paid on the job training which requires travel provided.

Entry level job candidates are hired as assistant signalmen and are expected to pass qualification steps to the signalman level in three years or less.

Probationary Period

60 Days

Union Membership

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
